Do not play wedding music

When I was researching the songs, I came across this. Very funny article.

By Anna Lynn Sibal

Everything about a wedding has to be romantic, and couples spend huge amounts of time pouring over details of their wedding ceremony and wedding party just so they have got everything down pat to their own notion of what is romantic. The music for the wedding ceremony and the dances is just among these details that engaged couples carefully attend to.

After all, whatever music is played at the wedding ceremony and the wedding party can make or break the prevailing mood and atmosphere of the event. It takes a good band or a good deejay to get the music swinging the way the bridal couple wants it to. This is why bridal couples find it important to hire a really good band or deejay to handle the repertoire for their wedding.

Any bridal couple should be aware, however, that no matter how carefully they instruct a deejay as to what to play and what not to play, there will be some songs that will subtly slip into the playlist that the bridal couple absolutely do not want to hear on their big day and just crash the mood of the wedding party. Think of Alexis Arquette’s character in the movie “The Wedding Singer,” who thinks it is perfectly all right to sing the Culture Club song “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?” at a wedding.

In order to avoid any such mishaps during the wedding ceremony and the wedding party, it is important for the bridal couple to carefully stipulate what songs they want to be played on their wedding as well as what songs they do not want to be played. The latter is simply called the “Do Not Play” list. For best results, these two lists should be added to the contract the bridal couple gets to sign with the deejay or the band for their services.

It is easy to build the “Do Not Play” list. What songs are actually listed there depend on the tastes in music that the couple has. Generally, songs that land in any wedding party’s “Do Not Play” list are:

Cheesy dance songs. Dance songs like “Macarena,” “YMCA,” “Achy Breaky Heart” and the like are often in “Do Not Play” lists because, while they are indeed entertaining and get people strutting their stuff on the dance floor, songs like these are so tacky and inelegant that it might turn off the guests at the wedding and discourage them from actually dancing.

Heartbreak songs. It is a wedding after all, so why play songs about heartbreak and death when the event is about the celebration of love everlasting? It just does not make sense. Examples of such songs are Tony Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart,” Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” Billy Idol’s “White Wedding,” and Patti Page’s “Tennessee Waltz.”

Simply godawful songs. Any songs hated by any half of the bridal couple belong to this segment of the list. It could be any song particularly disliked by the bridal couple, depending on their tastes in music.

Be warned Ladies....

Great day out.

Today we were meant to help decorate Chocofairy's hubby house but they were busy with the house painting so the rest of the gang decided to have a day out.

We went for yummy dimsum and had a few chuckles when Miss K missed a few words in the message on Chocofairy's prez After that it was shopping, shopping at HH. Everyone managed to buy something even Miss Skyline. Spent time queueing and enjoying (!) the crush of people.

Moved over to our favourite DVD shop where we desperately tried to find "especially for you' karaoke version. No one won the prize for finding it. Feeling peckish, we ended up at Ch**** and it was great not to share smoking space with idiots who still smoke indoors.

Finally, we travelled to RH and Angel got two books, one not suitable for anyone over 30. And after dropping off Miss Skyline and Miss Angel, I arrived home. Phew!

Also I found some cute pictures of kids as it is Chuseok.

Chuseok

Thought I would be random today and post something about 'Chuseok'. In Korea, it is Thanksgiving Day and the beginning of a two week holiday. Many people 'balik kampung' so the roads are really congested at this time.

Many people take the opportunity to leave the country en masse (sound familiar teachers?) and get away from the hustle and hassle of going home and preparing stuff according to traditional rites.

For those of you planning to marry Korean guys (ahem), you will need to learn the steps to setting and preparing the Ancestral Memorial Service.

The ancestral memorial service is the central event of Chuseok, Korea’s most important holiday. It’s a complex affair, and many Koreans are unsure about the principles for setting out the Chuseok ritual table or the procedure for the service and just follow what others do. Here, the Chosun Ilbo explains the correct procedure in easy-to-follow steps.

◆ How to set out the Chuseok ritual table

Make five rows on the table. In the first row from the folding screen, place songpyon, goblets, spoons and chopsticks. In the second row, place grilled and seasoned meat or fish (jeok) and pan-fried dishes (jeon). In the third row, put soup, in the fourth row, slices of dried meat or fish and seasoned vegetables and in the fifth row, fruit in odd numbers. The principles may vary from region to region or from family to family, but the following seven principles are common. Remember, however, the most important thing is sincerity in preparing the dishes.

Assuming that the ancestral tablet is the north: △ Red fruit should be put in the east and white fruit in the west. △ Place jujube, chestnuts, pears and persimmons in that order from the left. You can change the order of pears and persimmons. △ Put beef jerky on the left, and shikhye (an authentic Korean drink made from fermented rice) on the right. △ Place kimchi in the east and seasoned and steamed greens in the west. △ Place meat in the west and fish in the east. △ Let the fish face east with its tail in the west. △ Put rice in the west and soup in the east.

◆ Some baffling traditions explained

Cut off the top and the bottom of fruit. An official from the liturgical committee at the SungKyunkwan University explains, "The basic principle is to peel the fruit, but after peeling the fruits, the colors change, so it is recommended to cut off only some parts." Cutting off the top and bottom also makes it easier to pile them up. Soy sauce should be served on the table in case the ancestors feel dishes are insufficiently seasoned.

No kalchi (hairtail), samchi (a kind of mackerel) or kongchi (saury) should be served on the table. In Korea, fish, whose names end with "chi" are considered negative, and they can also smell bad. Nor should peaches appear on the table, since Korean spirits don't like peach trees. Spicy seasonings such as powdered red pepper, garlic and green onions should not be included in the dishes for the Chuseok ritual table. But an official from the National Folk Museum of Korea adds, "The ancestral memorial service aims to honor our ancestors, so it is permissible to put dishes that they enjoyed in their life on the table."

◆ The ceremony

1. Place the paper ancestral tablet on the altar and fumigate the altar with incense. The head of the family, who leads the service, pours liquor into the goblet three times, and bows twice. 2. Everyone bows twice. 3. Pour liquor for each ancestor and put chopsticks over the songpyon. 4. All should leave the room for a while or lie on their faces after shielding the table by setting up a folding screen in order for the souls of ancestors to eat the food. 5. Remove chopsticks. After everyone bows again, the service is over. 6. Burn the ancestral tablet. Then everyone may eat and praise the ancestors' virtues.

Chingus are the best

It was ladies nite again and today we had yummy sushi. Went mad there talking about potential 'karaoke' songs to sing at The Wedding. I still think 'It's Raining Men' is good but maybe the older generation there will not find it that amusing. Hehe..

We were joined later on by the BRIDE and got our red bombs. She finally had a chance to see the gift we bought for her, handpicked by LNG and I. I gotta say at least the others trust our taste. We agonised over the selection until the shop was about to close. At least the salesmen were entertaining and we were drowning in refills of tea.

Moseyed on over to Do-me where we sat and chatted for quite a while. I am sure by now ,the waiters and waitresses recognised us as regulars but hey! where are our members' cards!

Crazily enough, we will be having lunch later today. Go figure! We need to find men that will understand our sisterly need to be together.

It's late now so I am off to zzz.. Can't wait for my new furniture later today as well.

I leave you with two photos. They are actually not that great.

It's Singles Week!

Well, according to Yahoo anyway.

There are tons of interesting articles about being single out there. Here's sharing the ten best things about being single.

The 10 Best Things About Being Single

By Wendy Bolton Floyd and Judy Bolton
Singles often feel left out in our couple-driven society. Whenever you're tempted to feel down because of your singularity, remember these reasons why flying solo can be the best way to go:
1. You can make last-minute plans with your friends and stay out all night if you want.
~ Yes! It's great to be able to go out with your girlfriends without worrying what your man may be up to
2. You can lie on both sides of your bed and have all the covers to yourself.
~ Yup. No fighting over the blankets or a night time symphony in your ear.
3. You can flirt with the opposite sex without someone saying, "
“Who are you looking at?”
~ trying to get there
4. You can make your own decisions.
~ No need to skimp on the fattening dessert to look good. Just go for the Swensen's Earthquake!
5. You don't have to remember your significant other's birthday or anniversary.
6. You have no one to clean up after.
~ If you have ever cleaned up after a guy, especially the bathroom, you know what I mean.
7. You can leave the toilet seat permanently up if you're a man, or permanently down if you're a woman.
~ When it is up, you always have to disinfect your hands after you put it down. And cleaning it. Phew!
8. You can make a list of things you always wanted to do...and actually do them.
9. You can listen to your favorite radio station in the car.
10. You can actually hold on to the remote control.
~ No more ESPN or English League Football. I wanna watch Hallmark, dammit!
LOL!

Another cuz is off to UK

Sungkai at Airport
Today was an eventful day. Just came back from the airport after sending Mr D. It was a really packed airport today. Can't believe that it was Brunei International Airport but then again, there were three flights leaving at approximately the same time, go figure.

A slight hiccup in terms of luggage but luckily everything went through. All his good buddies went to the airport as well and quite a fair bit of his family members. Well ,you know the saying ' One Kampung to see one person.'

I am sure that he will do well there. He will be a more mature man when he is back and he will most likely appreciate the comforts of home when he does return.

All the best to D on his way to a Masters Degree. Way to go, Masters in Education, Advanced Educational Studies at Aberdeen!!

Will plan a big party on your return in June.

WWhoa.. nearly the end of the hols..

It has been a short but tiring holiday. I swear that I am out more often during this holiday than during normal school days.

Speaking of which, I went back to school and nothing much new there. Just a reminder about Wordplay (eek!)

I finally bought my furniture today as well as some paint for the new room.

Will finally be done once the floor is fixed. At the moment, my dad is ripping the carpet and vacuuming the room (I can hear the sound from here)

It really has been tiring and I think I need an holiday to recover from this one! At least it will be in another 3 weeks.

Most importantly now is the preparation for u-know-who's wedding. Coincidentally, I say her and hubby roaming the streets of Mata-Mata at around 2ish... possibly giving the red 'bomb'. :P

As promised, some pictures of my day trip to KB.

맛있다

Obviously not taken by me

Love the birds in action. Guess where this is?

Kiasu bandarians. 'Tapau' kolo mee for home

The mad rush for dumplings.

The transportation in KB was generously provided for by Jan and family. I guess the kids must have been doggone tired that nite!

Jan's link... obviously two of the photos was shot by him. Hehe.

Jan's blog

Have a visit!

Couldn't resist

Back from another night out with the ladies. And later today I am off to KB.

It was an interesting night with a lot of reminiscing about old songs which brought us back to our school days. A few 'technical' problems with a particular person's phone (yes, Jen , it's you) and somehow our conversation took a turn for the kinky with the difficulty in accessing Jen's phone *wink*

Inevitably, the conversation turned (briefly) to being attached and weddings. It is a hot topic right now for us. Some may feel anxiety and some may feel that whatever happens will happen. I believe that being single is a positive thing, being attached is a bonus. Unless that guy turns out to be a complete pri*k. LOL. I demand a refund then!!

So ladies, enjoy the positives of singlehood while we can and to those who are already attached, best of luck! We, as your sisters, will support you. If the fella ever is cruel to you and being a complete bast*rd, we will help tie him down and make him an eunuch!! *serious*

Off to bed for me now. Maybe the lateness of the hour has caused me to ramble on. Catch you all later!

P.S. Coffee at Bean, Gadong on Friday ~ 2.30 pm

Tuesday, September 11, 2007

Mian Haeyo!

My utmost apologies to my gang today. Well, Jo and Leng... I couldn't make the coffee cos I was waiting for the darn furniture.

I know they are probably making my ears itch while I am writing this apology. Well ladies, it's no bed of sakuras waiting for something which is supposed to be here at 3pm! Have pity on me lah.

Heads up to the regular Thursday night members. Can we make it tomorrow (Wednesday) if they don't sight the moon? I will be headed to KB on first day of puasa and will probably have no energy and be rushed if we meet on Thursday. How about it? 괜찮아요?

I will talk more about it later online and will also text Jenny, our last member to join the instant messaging community. (Jen, are you sneezing now? )

If not on Wednesday, what about Friday night? Take the poll!

Single life.

An article I found on the net. I may make an occassional comment or two.
P.S. This is mainly about 'older' women (i.e. in their forties and fifties)

The Secret Lives of Single Women
By Sarah Mahoney

Are unattached women sad, lonely, and financially troubled—as the stereotype would have it? In a myth-busting survey, thousands told us that despite some very real hardships, they’ve never been happier. < True enough, happiness is what we make of it >

It is often said that females are complex and mysterious creatures, hard to understand and completely unpredictable. But older single women seem to have a mythology all their own. They are lonely, they long for love, they are terribly afraid of dying destitute. < oooh >

Some myths about being single at a 'mature' age
Myth #1 All single women are desperate to find a mate.

Reality: Open to a nice relationship? You betcha. But obsessed with finding a partner? Hardly.
Given the option, many single women wouldn't mind a committed relationship with a cuddly, caring partner—preferably someone with minimal emotional baggage and the kind of income to support a nice summer house, facts supported by an AARP survey, "Lifestyles, Dating & Romance: A Study of Midlife Singles."

Myth #2 Single women are lonely.

Reality: Everyone is lonely sometimes—even married people. But most single women (as well as women with spouses) actually enjoy their solitude.
Living alone can be lonely. AARP's "Sexuality at Midlife and Beyond" survey found that 28 percent of single women said that within the past two weeks they had felt lonely occasionally or most of the time, compared with only 13 percent of married women in the same category. Slightly more single women (93 percent) than their married sisters (87 percent), however, said they felt their independence was important to their quality of life. "I love the freedom, and the fact that I know so many other single women I can network with," says Flo.

Myth #3: A single woman's worst fear is that she'll wind up old, sick, and alone.

Reality: Winding up alone, with no partner to care for them late in life, is increasingly likely for all women, married or single. But it's not something they lose sleep over.
The majority of single women (81 percent) aren't overly concerned about the prospect of growing old alone, according to the AARP Foundation women's study. Among those who do worry, divorced women (25 percent) fret more than widows (19 percent) and married women (17 percent). And in fact some single women recognize that their single status will actually protect them from the heartbreaking (and often health-breaking) ordeal of caring for a sick husband in his declining years.

Myth #4 Single women are sex-starved. < LOL >

Reality: They may be hungry at times, certainly, but most have a greater appetite for other forms of sustenance in their lives.
When it comes to sex, single women have all kinds of ways of dealing with—and without—it. A relatively low number, just 22 percent, of the 45-plus single women in AARP's "Sexuality at Midlife and Beyond" study were sexually active in the past six months, and only 18 percent had a regular sex partner. But either way, they weren't hung up about it. "After age 50 a number of single women want fun sex," says author Levine. "This is a no-holds-barred period of their lives—they're more sexually adventurous and easygoing, and while sex isn't the biggest deal in the world, they're more willing to take pleasure when it comes." Of the single women in AARP's sexuality study, 15 percent had watched adult films with a partner, 14 percent had used sex toys, 10 percent had had phone sex, and 7 percent had exchanged frisky notes or e-mails. And in the past six months 26 percent had masturbated.

But sexual urges aren't the main driving force for older women dating, at least in the same way they are for men. Some 11 percent of the men in the AARP lifestyles, dating, and romance survey, for instance, said the main reason they date is to fulfill their sexual needs, versus a mere 2 percent of the women. And 24 percent of single women in the same survey agreed that they could be happy never having sex again.

I have edited the not so interesting bits. The original article can be found at Secret Lives of Single Women

F.T.Island - 첫키스 - Chut Kisseu - First Kiss

could i be as amazing as the movies
with that girl, the first kiss
i think ill meet her again tomorrow
why is my heart already beating fast
and it feels like its going to explode

i wonder if it will be like cotton-candy
i close my eyes and wonder
if the girl is thinking the same

i think it will be sweet like candy
i also think that the aroma will be like that of a flower
i might get drunk off the aroma
thats what im worried about

but more than that, the bigger worry is,
though many may not believe,
honestly, i have never kissed anyone

should i turn my head like in the movies?
how should i breathe after the kiss?
that also worries me
when should i close my eyes, and how should my nose be placed
how long should it be
i dont know

if you were sweet like candy
then i will stay like that for a long time
even if i become drunk off your lips, i will stay up
im afraid that you might not like me
so i will confess first
honestly, this kiss is my first

it has been a while since i have been staying up with those worries
finally, we kissed on a long night
sweeter than a lemon, i couldnt move from that position
i was happy
i became frozen
that girl was thankful and it was a relief
i will promise, i will forever only kiss you
i will only kiss you...

Now seriously...

First of all, I gotta say 'Thank God Clubbox is back'

A majority of us were having withdrawal symptoms and that made us realise how heavily we depended on this mode of downloading to get our drama fix. Jo and Julie will be heaving huge sighs of relief and begin frantically downloading stuff that we have missed over the past few days. (As I am doing as well)

I have got some good news for K. I managed to get in touch with the guy and he has agreed and will also bring some friends along! So now we have to settle where and when to meet. Any ideas, ladies?? Hehe.

On my mind as well is about the maintainance of two blogs. I think that from today onwards I will blog mainly in blogspot but will cross blog if there is anything interesting. I think it's not worth doubling cos it'a basically the same thing. Perhaps this blog will be kept for 'deeper' contemplations of life and it's meaning as well as how 'singlehood' is for ladies. I expect to scour the internet for tidbits, tips and in general interesting news for us ladies.

As for multiply, I will be posting more trivial stuff like Korean news and culture. Something light and fun to read.

I hope that my good 'chingus' will read both blogs. I guarantee lots of surprises and hopefully thought-provoking issues that pertain to us in my blogspot.

Til then, see u ladies around in real and print life. Happy reading and comments are always welcome, both critical and constructive but never destructive or demeaning.

사랑앓이 ( sarangalhee ) translation

Really love FT Island. And I don't even know much about this group, except that it's made up of 5 guys. Really young guys.

The lyrics to the first hit: ' Love Sick'

The kind of person whom you can see better when you miss them and close your eyes
The kind of person whom you think about more whenever you try to forget and erase them
I lied to my heart saying that kind of person will come
Though they never told you they would come, the kind of person whom you can't help but wait for

That I loved them so much, that I loved you so much
Through you, through that sin, I'm suffering through this wait
That I loved them so much, that I missed you so much
Through you, through that sin, I'm suffering through these tears.. like this

I lied to my heart saying that kind of person will come
Though they never told you they would come, the kind of person whom you can't help but wait for

That I loved them so much, that I loved you so much
Through you, through that sin, I'm suffering through this wait
That I loved them so much, that I missed you so much
Through you, through that sin, I'm suffering through these tears.. like this

A love whose separation is to fast, a love that's slow to forget
A love that always hurt only me, that I was suffering through it all

Wonbin - rap
Did you have to leave me like this
Did you have to leave me like this
You'll probably just take my life and love another, the heartless you who forgot me and went on with your life
You'll probably just take my everything and love another, you who forgot me and went on with your life

Hongki-
The one who'd take my life and love another
The one who left me only tears
A love that always hurt only me, that I was suffering through it all
That I loved them so much, that I missed you so much
Through you, through that sin, I'm suffering through these tears.. like this

A really sad love song... I will look for the translation for their song on my current playlist.

Another night..

It was another night with the ladies. Mind you, it was only the three of us.

Had dinner at Pizza Hut in the Mall and I didn't know that there was an 8% service charge for not really good service.

Next came the walk around and coffee at the usual place.

It was freaking raining tonight and there were tons and tons of cars around. In the end I had to park at Centrepoint and walk to the Mall. Weirdly enough the amount of people at the Mall didn't really match the number of cars.

We plan to meet again later at the bookshop and coffee (?) again. Hey, I am all caffeined up!

노무 행복 해요!!!

Oohh.... A man like this

I am back. Wow.. a second post today!

I came across a news article about the first South Korean guy in space. He is a robotics engineer.
http://edition.cnn.com/2007/TECH/space/09/05/skorea.astronaut.ap/index.html As well as intellectual ability, he is also known to have athletic talents. With a medium-built body (1.7 meters and 68 kilograms), he won a bronze medal in the national amateur boxing competition in 2004 and had served as a member of the Seoul National University mountaineering team.
Mmm.... have to find a guy like this. A rocket scientist!!
Plus he is one attractive man.

A Great nite out.

It was a great night for everyone. There were lots of things said and done. Plus lots and lots of yummy food.

The corsages

It has really been a while since we all gathered together and last night was an opportunity to wish a friend a happy end to her bachelorette hood. We have planned some things for her wedding day so watch out! It seems like we are more excited about the wedding then the bride herself!

Never fear though, one of us will be getting married next year and that person will get the $300 'bootie' for the next to be legally wed. LOL!

Leng's bold fashion statement

Okay guys, about Elda's thingy. I have to say this. Yes, it is good to have a new friend but please ease off on the pressure! Kudos to Jenny for taking the first leap. I am still a bit cautious.. hehe

Shaggy hair!

So I think the newest hairstyle for guys is the shaggy hair. If you had seen my previous photos of basketball players (No 43 and No 8) , they sport similar hairstyle to Jang Dong Geun....

Hmm... better than the Winter Sonata hair I think. At least the shaggy look has a bit of curl in it.

No other news to report. School was boring today and tomorrow we have cleaning campaign and aerobics. Whoopee!! I am delirious with joy *sarcasm sarcasm*

Something to consider for the trip at the end of the year !

Map makes surfing Korean Wave easy for Seoul's tourists

The American soap opera “Sex and the City” was such a hit not only in the U.S. but also across the world. Hundreds of restaurants, bars and shops that were featured in the show instantly became must-see destinations for those visiting New York. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has picked up on the idea and produced a “Hallyu Map” in English, Japanese and Chinese that marks all the locations of TV shows and films shot in Seoul that have become hits abroad. Officials have worked hard to induce interest in Korea through Hallyu as a way to increase tourism from the rest of Asia. But recently the number of visitors has declined as the impact of the Korean pop wave phenomenon has waned a bit since its peak in 2004. But with the introduction of the new map, officials say they hope to revive Hallyu tourism by attracting fans of Korean shows and movies set in Seoul. The latest map includes Changdeokgung Palace, which was featured in “Daejanggeum.” Changdeokgung's Aeryeonji Pond is where King Jungjong expressed his appreciation toward Janggeum, the royal chef, in the drama. Street scenes in the shopping district Myeongdong have starred in quite a few hit shows and make a powerful comeback on the Hallyu map as well. Before tracing places on the map, visitors can visit http://www.hellohallyu.com/, a website of the Korea Tourism Organization that features a list of Korean movies and soap operas that have been exported overseas with storylines, cast, and filming locations. The new recommended Hallyu map tour begins at ChoongAng High School from “ Winter Sonata,” the hit drama at the center of the Hallyu frenzy in 2004. There are street vendors outside of the school selling souvenirs. The male lead played the piano for his lover at the school.

scene from the movie CC (campus couples) play a big part in Korean soap operas and movies: Much of “My Sassy Girl” and “Beautiful Days” were shot on Yousei University's campus. Especially, fans of the movie “The Classic” should visit Yonsei since many of its scenes were shot there. "The Classic" enthusiasts will remember the scene where Ji-hye takes shelter under a tree on the campus during a rain shower and meets a boy named Sang-min who is destined to become the love of her life. The melodrama “Stairway to Heaven” was shot in many cliché places, including a theme park, but still fans love to step into its familiar scenes. In the main scene of the drama, the male lead rides a merry-go-round in an amusement park with a girl he has loved since childhood. As emotions reach a peak, the male lead shouts the famous line “Love is destined to come back,” on the ice rink in Seoul's Lotte World. Ever since the drama, the merry-go-round has become the park's trademark, drawing hundreds of Asian tourists.

Duchamp,a posh dessert cafe in southern SeoulDuchamp, a posh dessert cafe south of the river, has also been a hot spot for young Koreans after it was featured in “My Lovely Samsoon.” In the drama, the arrogant male owner of a chic French restaurant takes his chubby thirty-something pastry artist girlfriend to a posh shop and orders over 60 kinds of cakes, puddings and tarts and lays them on a giant table for her to sample. The free Seoul Hallyu Map comes in English, Chinese and Japanese and can be found in various tourist information booths and airports in Korea as well as travel agencies.
